A tall and strong, elegantly attractive young woman enters the musty attic. She glances over the contents and ponders why her mother wasn’t there to take care of these affairs. She had to be at the game in an hour. Her mind wanders back to an earlier conversation.

“Jas, if you are late again, you will be off the squad. Do you understand? It’s not fair to the others. You need to make a choice.” Just thinking of what her coach said made her think of another statement made to her by a criminology professor.

He told her that pretty girls never make it in this field, unless they learn their place. Oh, how she frustrated him! She would pick things out of mock crime scenes and fly through his teaching with ease, well ahead of the class. She had gotten so angry that day. Glaring at him, she stomped out of the room, never to return.

Now here she was packing up things that belonged to a woman she never knew. Her mother never spoke of her grandmother. Until she died, Jas hadn’t even known her grandmother lived in the city. Her mother had grand notions for her as a child and didn’t want her grandmother to be any influence, since her grandmother had never learned “her place.” She wanted her to BE someone! Her mother had even fought her father in naming her Jas, which was her grandmothers’ name. He had ultimately won that match.

As she started through the attic she noticed some things placed carefully and others tossed wherever. She could tell which things had been packed with care and had meaning to her grandmother. Her eyes rested on a small trunk, tucked away in the corner. The floor around it was thick with dust, but the trunk only had a thin layer on it. She went to open it, but found it locked. Grabbing a hair pin she found, she had it opened in a flash.

She pulled out manuscripts, diaries, and something wrapped in a cloth. She sat down on another box and looked at the papers she’d discovered. She started reading the diaries. She learned of the great detective her grandmother had been. How she ran a detective agency in New York, ran it well and made her place. In the back of one of the diaries was a picture. The woman in it was extremely beautiful and sophisticated and the man was handsome, her grandparents.

As she put the books and papers back into the trunk something fell to the floor. She picked it up and smiled. It was the business card to her grandmother’s agency, The Blue Pagoda. She reached for the cloth wrapped item and opened it. The light glinted off the blade. She stared at it for awhile. She nodded to herself, coming to a decision. She would make herself a place. She wrapped up the blade and tucked it under her arm. She slipped the business card in her pocket, closed the trunk and turned to go.

Now, she’ll be on the prowl for bad guys and of course….she will carry the stiletto.
