They say that if you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Well, I did the crime alright, and ended up doing the time too...but that wasn't the worst of it.
Word had gone around that a recent emigre, a very proud and dignified Eastern European lady had a fortune stashed in her apartment. I decided I should have my share but when I got there I found someone had already beaten me to it. They weren't as subtle as I would have been though - they'd tried to bludgeon the hiding place from the poor old lady. I found her laying in a pool of blood, still breathing, just, but robbed of her dignity, along with her jewels.
I had to call it in, get an ambulance to her, but it was too late. She died as they walked in the door - and I was leftwith the problem of explaining what I was doing there.
I confessed to the attempted burglarly, and a whole string of previous crimes too, to convince them that I wasn't the killer, I wasn't that kind of thief.
Now, three years later, I'm a free woman, but I'm not going back to my old life, oh no.
A new start for me, new town, new career. This time I'm the one after the crims - maybe, one day, I'll have the pleasure of tracking down those who killed Mrs Popowij.
There's no shortage of work here, for sure, and I got adopted by a little cross breed dog, I call her Pippa, because it seems to suit. She's great at helping me sniff out clues (not that I go round sniffing, you understand) but she did cause me a problem the other day.
We sat on a park bench looking through my latest case file, I'd just figured out who was the guilty one, when Pippa took off after a squirrel. I thought I'd lost her for sure, couldn't find her anywhere.
I was so upset that I went to see the wrong woman and accused her of the murder. I realised straight away what I had done, and luckily Mona was very understanding, but the real murdress had time to get clean away.
Oh well, maybe it was a wake up call, I had been getting a bit complacent, and not all was lost, Pippa came trotting home four hours later.
