"I'll have a double, Gustav."

It had been a long day, a long week, hell, even a long month. The work in the area has been drier than a puddle in a Turkish summer. It wasn't that there was a shortage of cases as such, just a shortage of witnesses. Many a time I'd turn up to a guy's house to find the door ajar and his body in a crumpled heap on the floor. As a result, like many of the local sleuths, I ended up making a few mistakes. My record wasn't perfect, and if I wasn't careful I could end up without a license before long.

My reasons for entering the bar on this night were not to interrogate the barman, or even the local beat cop who sometimes proves to be useful. No, I had a meeting with the local "Fixer" to see if I could wipe my record clean, and I needed some Dutch courage before I set out.

I pounded the double scotch and promptly ordered another. Before I knew it there were several glasses littered about the bar ahead of me and I was starting to feel a little tipsy. All the best for the meeting ahead.

I slipped into the seat opposite the Shady Character, and looked her up and down. Maybe it was the eye patch, or possibly the hat, but something unnerved me about this woman. Without saying a word, she slipped a note across the table to me, and I opened it.

"$12900? Where do you get a figure like that from? I wouldn't have thought it was that hard to steal a few documents."

"The price is the price. If you can find someone else to do it cheaper, then be my guest. Otherwise, get the hell outta my way."

I knew it was daylight robbery, but what other choice did I have? After all, I guess its better to not eat today so I can carry on working than be out of a job tomorrow.
