Winding Down Shades

Hey Sleuths!

I've got some pretty crappy news to share: We're going to have to wind down Shades of Mystery by the end of the year. This is something I've really wanted to avoid, but I don't have a realistic alternative. With the demise of Flash, the game isn't going to continue to function in 2021 unless you use a very old browser.

- We won't be selling any new subscriptions to Shades of Mystery
- We'll fully refund the remaining time on any active subscriptions (your sub will still be active)
- The game will probably be coming down at (or slightly after) New Years
- As a thank you to everybody, in a week or so, we'll grant full subscriber rights to everybody for the remainder of the game's life.

The writing has been on the wall for several years. Adobe is retiring Flash https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/end-of-life.html because it isn't standards compliant. I've had aspirations to migrate the front end to a modern javascript interface, but it would require a huge time commitment.

This sucks. I haven't updated the game much for years, but the project represents a ton of my time and energy along with major contributions by Sunny, YetiFace, Secret Squirrel and a bunch of other friends and players who were kind enough to pitch in. It's a lot to let go of, but it's important to recognize when the road you're on comes to an end.

Although I haven't been playing much for the last year or so, it does saddens me to see the game go... It wasn't unexpected though... :(

This makes me so sad! I only just rediscovered the game and was so keen to play again. I'm glad I'm able to at least enjoy it for the next bit of time. Thanks for putting in so much effort into this brilliant game!

I just received a refund & expected to see your announcement as a result.
It is obvious that you put an enormous amount of Blood, Sweat & brain power into this game.
You did an outstanding job.
You have my sincere sympathy, I'm sure this isn't easy to handle.

While this is sad news, I'm so grateful for the time, effort, and commitment you and everyone have put into this game. When I first started playing so many years ago, I promise -- this game brought me back to life. I can't thank you enough. I have yet to find a game as interesting and interactive (to ME). Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Sorry the game cannot be saved. Pity that someone else did not take it over in previous years, as I think you have been too busy to invest (not blaming you), time to the game. Good luck to all in the future, hopefully we can find a similar game involving teamwork that is interesting. Any suggestions anyone?

You could always use your talents and sell it on Steam, or a similar platform.

Is there any chance the daily cap could be removed for non-subscribers since it's no longer possible to subscribe? I'd love to play as much of this as I can before it heads out. Thank you for sharing this game with us, I'm sorry to see it go!

Oh no :(

How do I access the subscriber things?

It's an unfortunate situation with flash, sad to see the game go. First played it as a kid and still log on every now and then, thanks for all your hard work and a great game that has kept me coming back for years.

P.S. Someone mentioned putting it on Steam, I know for example Swords and Sandals has been put on Steam, not sure how difficult it would be but I'd be willing to pay for it if you could get it on there. Just a thought.
